How do you do it?

I pluck and thread my eyebrows...

My first ever attempt at removing hair on my legs was with an epilator. That's the only device my mum allowed me to use, she went on as if a razor was the devil. I continued to use this method for years.

However, using the epilator gave me plenty of ingrown hairs which I undoubtedly picked at all the time which often lead to scars. I found 'Silkimiz' which is basically sand paper for your legs and removes hair when used in gentle circular motions. This wasn't great as the hairs started to grow back the next day, but is a great thorough exfoliation method.

I tried waxing a few times, but it's just too messy, the hair removal creams smell so bad I just can't bring myself to continuously use them.
I then decided to use razors "the devil device", however women's razors are TERRIBLE, the first time I used one I scraped a layer of skin off my leg. I scrapped that and opted for men's razors which I have been using for the past couple of years.
Personally I haven't found my leg hairs to have grown back thicker or darker because of using razors, I don't get any ingrown hairs but it is a bit of a pain to do it regularly, whereas with the epilator I did it every week or so.

However, now we have IPL (Intense Pulse Light) technology, which we can use at the comfort of our own home for permanent / reduction in hair removal instead of shelling out the £££'s for laser treatment at a salon.

I have been sent 2 kits to try, one is the E-one and one is the i-Pulse. Both of them claim to be better than each other and I am going to put them to the test. I will try one on the left leg and one on the right leg to see which preforms best. I will report back in a few months!

How do you remove your unwanted hair? What's your story?

Disclaimer: I was sent the E-one and i-Pulse for review purposes, I did not get paid for this post and I am not affiliated with the brands.

Hey darling!
You have made me smile: my mother also thinks that the razor is the devil but I must admit is the most common method I use... Especially the Gillette Venus ones.
I would love to try I-pulse!

I'm a Nair lotion girl all the way. Waxing hurts and shaving is annoying to me...i just sit with the nair on for some mins, rinse off and go about my day. I get waxed or threaded for my face though

Nair gives me a chemical burn and waxing is once again too hard on my skin. So I just shave with women's razors but I try all different creams to shave with.

I totally agree with you...in fact in-grown hair is a topic that drives me mad. I would say that the best option for me is having a wax (which in my country is quite cheap). However, you end up paying and waisting time going to the salon to have a result that lasts only 10 days. Anyway, I am glad you are doing this experiment. I've always wanted to know if these devices are effective at all :D Besos!

@catanya lol my mother is not the only one :) I have tried the gilette venus and I still prefer the mens razors!

@socialitedreams Ahhh I agree with the waxing, it's just too painful!

@Crystal Try mens razors, you will be converted :)

@Marta I have tried several creams and potions to supposedly stop ingrown hairs, but it's all a load of rubbish, the best thing to get rid of an ingrown hair is to pick at it and squueze it out lol

really looking forward to you comparing the two! x

I shaved for years, wish I'd never started as all I had was fine blonde hairs on my legs that then turned dark and stubbly! I did them every other day for 14 years! I had laser hair removal treatment (6 sessions) and started about a year ago. There is still a lot of hair left and to be honest it wasn't really worth the pain and money. And it was sooo painful. The hair is now finer and blonder, but it's patchy and you need to remove it somehow...I've now started using a heat based device (NoNo) to see if that will get rid of the remaining hairs. Grrrrr I hate being a girl sometimes! If I have a daughter I will not let her use a razor if she has hair like I did!x
StellieStellina said…
one other thing... be careful with using a light based treatment on your skin - as your skin is quite dark it can effect the pigment and leave you patchy so make sure you check against the skin colour charts. You can't use it if you've got a tan either.xxx

Mens razors are the best, I use the Gilette Fusion, expensive but the best shave! Just call me Dave! lol x x

Oo I like the picture of the tweezers on the thread! Very nice!
I hate hair. Im lucky i don't have it on my body but my moustache grows with a vengence!! I thread it myself and thats all I can do i guess as im too scared to laser my face!! Let us know how your leg experiment goes!!

By the way I pissed myself over you last comment. Thank you hon xx

@Stellie Awww, maybe the razor is the devil device afterall. With my skintone I can just about get away with using ipulse, the Eone is also catered for slighly darker skin. I have waited until Autumn/winter to test them out so my skins not tanned. Hopefully I should be ok. xx

@Stacey or shall I say dave? lol, I love the fusion too! x

@Tali - Thanks, I sometimes get crazy trying to capture the perfect angle, it's an illness I tell you, and glad I made you smile with my last comment on your blog! X

I agree that womens razors are rubbish...I use the mens Gillette pivoting head razor w/the aloe strip. It gets all my girly bits nice and smooth. This is the only method that works for me, since I shave quite frequently. I'm part Armenian and if I don't shave regularly the werewolf creeps back! hahaha Can't wait to see your reviews...thanks for sharing!

I use the hot wax Acorelle, which is paraben-free. ok it's true that hurts a little but my skin is so soft after doing it.

I also like oriental wax with sugar-based.

But one must suffer to be beautiful! :)

ahh! I used mens razors as well! I also use a mens shaving foam (the original source mint + tea tree – it is soooo cooling and soothing for my sensitive skin on my legs) Have always been curious about epilators so I will be very excited to see how the two you were sent compare! :D xx

I used to wax the hair on my leg but I do agree with you, it is very messy. So I started using an epilator (it is an older Braun one). It does give you some ingrown hair but I found a way to get rid of them. I use a grate for removing callus and gently rub it on the area with the ingrown hair to get them out and then remove it with the epilator. It does not leave any scars. I use the epilator every 7 to 10 days and I like it. It has reduced my hair as well. My mom never allowed me to use razor either :- ). I am persian and have dark brown hair!
Please let us know how the at home laser goes. I would love to get rid of the hair on my legs once and for all if it works.

OMG my mother also said razors were the devils toys ...for the first half of my adult life I didnt even look directly at them I was so tramatized!! LOL LOL LOL

oh well its kinda nice to know someone else had it the same.

I started off with an epilator but it was just way to painful so Ive gone with waxing now for like 5 years and its great. smooth soft long lasting hair free legs.

its the way to go !

LOL my mother told me the same thing:-) I always shave:-) waxing is just too much effort and time. For my face I use a nair hair remover for sensitive skin:)

When we were teens, my mom would take me and my sis to get our legs waxed - but I hated the in-between growth - so I opted for shaving. I tried an epilator - but it gives me terrible in-grown hairs too.

Here's my breakdown:
lip: waxing or threading (I prefer threading - but sometimes it hurts too much - easier to just rip off in one go!)
underarms: epilator (I use a battery operated travel epliator from Argos - have been using it for 10 years - I have very little growth left - yay!)
arms - wax once in a while - I'm not that hairy - but smooth arms just looks nice in the summmer. Brazilian wax - get this professionally done every 1-2 months.
Legs - shave.
My mum also didn't like me using razors when I was younger. She would use a ladyshave once a week on her legs...But I'm much hairier than her! My first experience was razors was not good, but I usually shave my lower legs and wax or use cream on my upper legs. I agree that men's razors are much better quality! xx

I use mens razors too, so much better. Look forward to seeing the results! My hair grows so quickly, I have to shave stupidly often, hate it! xx

Whoa, I'm also one of those people who think razors are brought from the dark side!

I use wax strips, before using I hold'em against a sack with boiled water, so the wax gets soft. I use them for ALL my bodyparts, if u understand what I mean :) ..
Smooth, no mess, no itching, no ingrown hair for 2 months, but I must say I need some mental preparation before I start :P (To think afterwards it wasn't that painful).

I do not wax my face, I epilate them, wish I could thread though..

Anyways, this is my first time commenting and my comment is already becoming too long, but I just want to say something.. french :P :

Je love u and ur blog beaucoup! Muaah~

I think it's amazing that you can use the at home treatment to remove unwanted hair. That's interesting. I use women's razors, and I always get razor burn. Ugg it's a pain in the neck. Never tried threading either....that would be interesting.

Hair removal...wow. I use razor under the arms and on legs, for my arms & *ahem* I use sugaring, brows and lip gets threaded (or plucked if I do it myself)..not until now, have i actually thought about how many different ways I go about de-hairing one body! Lol. I've wanted to do laser, but it didn't work out well for others in my family because of our coloring..it would be so much easier though, so I'm looking forward to your results :)
I'm a waxer. I only started doing it two years ago (razors before then) but I have found that the hair grows back slower and is actually quite patchy! In fact there are parts of my legs where hair no longer seems to grow and I think that's because of continuous waxing...although it took two years to get to this point lol.

Oh it'll be good to know how you get on with these! I tried an epilator but couldn't stand the pain lol.. I just shave my legs now but I hate that it grows back so quickly..bah!!

Excellent post! I was actually thinking to e-mail you and ask you to write about this topic! Also, great pictures! I have used EVERYTHING and depending on the time in my life, how busy I am, and what my budget is like, I still use varying methods of all of the above.

I find that the venus razors are the only ladies' razors comparable in quality to men's razors. I hate lotions cause they smell and that was embarassing after I got married. I love waxing, but only if I can afford to go to a salon. my face I use a combination of mini wax strips and thread. I use the epilator occasionally on my legs, and always on my underarms.

You say that you don't get excess growth from shaving, but do you think that might be because you started out with epilating which weakened all the growth? I find shaving gives me ingrowns and my aesthetician always scolds me for it.

Mens razors work really well for me I have to shave as I can't stand body hair and nothing else is quick enough as waxing, etc means you have to wait inbetween treatments. I have never had a problem with ingrown hairs and the hair doesn't grow back coarse so I must just be lucky hey? Sometimes I wax though. The I-Pulse looks good.

I did a course of 10 IPL sessions on my face and i have to say it was SOOOO worth it. Bloody expensive but it was relatively painless but very very effective. I need to get some more though but for that i need to save save save hehe!

I never had too much hair, and it's blonde so it's almost invisible but once I started waxing at 16 years old I only had to do it once a year because my hair is soo lazy xD And now I don't have almost any hair on my legs, it's really weird that it just stopped growing!

waxing heurts, does d IPL really work? i tried in a cosmetic salon in Paris the laser hair removal on my upper lip & chin, even with the anasthetic cream (45m prior) it heurt so bad!!! it actually went through my lips & caused trumendous pain to my teeth, i never went back, lol

I'd love to know how the hair removal goes, i'm definitely considering getting one of those.
I had a look on the Boots website though and when I do the test it says my skin is probably too dark to use it which is a bit worrying. You seem to be darker skinned than me though so if it works out ok for you im definitely going to consider it. Out of curiosity do you fake tan at all? I'm just a tad darker than nc20 all over y body i'd say, is that lighter than you? Sorry for so many q's but it'd really help me knowing :)
Thanks
