Nivea as a night cream

I used to use this cream for years, it was the first moisturiser I ever used. These were the times that my skin was flawless! I must of been doing something right so I recently repurchased. The reason why I stopped using this was because someone told me it gave facial hair which was a load of nonsense but I believed them and stopped using it... and that's when problems and experiments with new skincare regimes began.

Currently, I either use the Bobbi brown tinted moisturiser or Olay Beauty Fluid in the mornings. I stopped moisturising my skin at night so that the natural oils could do its job but realised my skin looked very dry and cracked looking. Winter is approaching and therefore I decided it was time for some intense action. I have been using the Nivea creme for about 4 nights now and my skin is very supple looking, no more cracks! :) This cream is rumoured to have the same or similar ingredients as La Mer, enlighten me somebody!

The texture of this is very thick and rich, once applied it leaves a greasy finish perfect for somebody to see a reflection of themselves in. It's just way too much for daytime, and for that reason I would only recommend using it at night. When I used this in the past, I even used it in the mornings, what was I thinking? I think therefore, my skin was used to SO much moisture that it really had a hard time adjusting to normal light creams, however thank god the Olay beauty fluid works for me. One thing I noticed about this cream is that it has healing properties, when I got blemish marks, this cream helped make them less visible, I'm not sure if that's true, but when I wake up in the morning I can definitely see a difference. It might just be wishful thinking but I like to think that it helps.
Please keep in mind that my skin is dry... this might be too greasy for somebody with normal, combo or oily skin. Furthermore, I think this is a good winter cream, in the summer it may just be too much.

Have you tried this cream, if so what do you think about it?

I find Nivea to be a little bit too greasy for my skin. It doesn't get absorbed as well as the more expensive night creams I use. I find it works well for dry areas like knees and elbows though.

@the style pa yes it is very very greasy, it's great for elbows... it would be way too much on normal, combo or oily skin. xx
I'm a big fan of Nivea creme. I use Nivea Soft as my body moisturiser and I carry a little tin of the creme around with me for emergency moisturisation needs!

I think Nivea is one of those cremes you use now and again...i only use it during the winter because my skin is so dry and chapped, and i love how it protects it and coats it more then any exspensive creme can.

but for summer i reckon it would be too much even at nite, i guess it depends what you prefer, at nite like you said i dont really use anything but an eye creme..and my day time moisturiser at the minute is a dr haushka one...not seeing any great results yet...but its only been 2 days lol x

It is only comapared to Creme de La Mer if you have the Nivea creme that is made in Germany and not Mexico. The Mexico made one has petrolatum, and two antimicrobial/antifungal ingredient which can cause sensitivity and irritation. Just thought I would spread the word.

@Goo I agree with you, good luck with your new skincare :) give it a couple of weeks.

I have used Creme de la mer and I often said it was just like nivea (i.e not worth the £100 I paid for it). I didn't know that was a common perception. Interesting..

methylchloriosothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone are the two indgredients you need to watch out for Its carried in the Mexcio Nivea cream. I guess it is also banned in Canada. (not the creme but the mexico version.)unfortunately I can only get the Mexico version in the states If you check out ebay you will see that is why the German brand cost so much.

I too have just started using this as a night cream, because of its thickness and richness. Ive yet to have any problems and my skin seems to be benefiting from it. Im a bit confused now with all this Mexico and Germany stuff though :(

I used Nivea too when I was young. It is greasy but oh so worth it in the morning result. Thanks so much for sharing! <3

Sorry for the confusion. I did some research on this a year ago and just wanted to share..But if something works for you keep doing it, Everyone is different. It just so happens I have sensitive skin so I have to research anything before I apply it on my skin.

When I used to live back home (Bosnia).. I used to use Nivea.. my skin wasn't as oily then. But now, I don't know, I'm just not a fan of greasy creams as beneficial as they can be... especially at night, where my face is sticking to the pillow (I'm a side sleeper, and have been trying to train myself to sleep on the back simply for this reason.. so the creams won't rub off)
My bf actually ONLY uses nivea on his face, and his skin looks flawless.. I get jealous.
So you might be onto something here..

Hi! Nivea is my HG cream too. I use Nivea Soft though, as it is lighter in texture and smells pretty. I wish Nivea would add SPF to their creams, I don't like their potions much. I also use it in the morning, but have to use a primer with SPF.

I love your blog btw!

i love this stuff for my hands as an overnight treatment...it works wonders...xoxo
I use this cream as my skin is so dry, especially in the winter months. I only ever use it at night as it is very greasy but it is so good for people with dry skin! I love it. I also use the Nivea soft (in the white tub) as this isn't as greasy and can be used in the daytime too. It also smells gorgeous. I've gone through tubs and tubs of them both! :) x
Love Nivea :-) I always have one in my bathroom.

Cheers: Evi

I don't like this cream, I'm more of a Nivea Soft girl, just a bit lighter.

That's brilliant! I've been using it as a night cream for yonks too, as it's very rich (greasy), is inexpensive, foolproof/trusted formula and smells divine!

My Mum would use this and Oil of Ulay (wasn't Olay in the 80s!) on me and my brother when we were little. Aww the memories - LOL

Yes! Nivea and La Mer are he same!! I know a girl that worked at Jo Malone and La mer and she actually told me they ingred are exactly the same. I used to use La Mer and loved it for some reason I am scared to put Nivea on my face. Has it clogged your pores at all? xx

I have this cream as well. I always use this for my body, I never thought about using it for my face. I think it would be way too heavy for my face, but for anywhere else this stuff is great! Its true what you said that it is quite greasy and thick but its so moisturizing. When the climate gets colder my hands tend to get SO cracked so I use this at night then in the morning they are really soft and renewed. Love this creme.

Well, here it's mostly used to relieve the skin after sunburns...

It's a really thick consistency, and I wouldn't think of using it for my face...
Works wonderfully as a hand cream though! ;)

Musine - I'm the same as you: Nivea creme was the first cream I used and I used it for ages. My dad still uses it and he's been using it for longer than I've been alive haha!

Nivea! Me, my grandma, my mom, we all use this creme on our lips, face, neck and decollete. It is the staple creme for us during winters.
For me too, It was the first moisturiser that I ever used!

Does anyone else love the packaging? In Europe it's sold in tin pots, not plastic ones, and I think it's very chic and retro.

I would also be interested to read in how far Nivea compares to the La Mer cream; as far as I know the classic Nivea (blue pot) does have a lot of parabens and other ugly ingredients in it, regardless of where it's made (I live in Germany and can tell you that there are loads of chemicals in the products here, too).
I don't know.. I'm a bit hesitant to smear this on my face. I occasionally carry it around with me as a hand cream.

I also like the smell of the classic Nivea as well as of the blue Nivea body lotion that smells slightly sour, of almonds, though I don't like the feel of it on my skin :(

Great post, thank you!

Nivea is absolutely..AWESOME! I use it religiously summer..winter...sometimes morning...ALWAYS night. The only thing that worries me about it is all the tugging I have to do at my skin to distribute the product.
But thats okay...I guess I should stop being lazy and just warm it up in my fingers!

When I first got excited about what the Stars were raving about 'La Mer'
I had to give it a try. When I first opened the jar I thought it smelled so familiar. so then I read the ingredients and knew immediately what the smell was. All the women in my family wear Nivea and they have beautiful skin. The one that's pictured on your blog...in the blue jar. Even the La Mer jar is ugly and plain...for that much money you'd at least expect nice packaging and nice ingredients. And they've never had hair problems from this cream as you've mentioned. I also use it as a night cream on dry days and even as an eye cream...simply Beautiful !!
I love Nivea Night Creme, it's quite thick and greasy, so I know what you are saying Bubblegarm. I often have the internal battle in my head about natural oils versus night creams. I guess as you get older you need something to replace the oils you're body is not producing as much of anymore.

I always freak out when somebody says they use it on their face, but when it turns to you, I tend to have some kind of blind faith... Nevertheless, I am scared it can cause break outs...
Maybe I should try for a week or so, it is not expensive at all!
Please tell us if you are experimenting any new pimples because of this.
