H&M destroys unsold clothes!
This post originally stated my excitement for H&M's new spring garden collection with visuals, but I removed the content. I found out through a comment on this post and some further research that it was discovered yesterday that H&M was found to destroy unsold clothes instead of give them to charity. How awful? It's freezing cold, how can somebody be so thoughtless. I am disgusted - they need to sort it out! Read more about that HERE or do your own research.
Ironically their new collection states that they used organic cotton, organic linen and recycled polyester for a more sustainable world. Where's the justice in that? Hopefully this is just an error of one store and not a company policy.

and then bragging about using organic material to create a more sustainable environment?
they need to get their priorities straight.
The people interviewed mentioned another store a few doors down that do the same thing. I can't remember which store it was though!
About 7 years ago in California, all the food markets went on strike. People, including me, would not cross the picket lines. It could become violent. Later I found out that ALL the food was the own out after sold date.
Charities were begging fir the food, but they didnt want to be at blame if anyone got sick.
So, the next news stories were of people going through dumpsters looking for the food!
What is going on? People are cold & hungry!

I would rather them sale it to outlets or places like TJMaxx, Ross tho. Or send the ripped up items to be recycled?
MAC does the same thing with makeup - they throw away returned items. Waste, yes - but I'm sure its to be more hygienically then wasteful but who knows...
I guess though if local charities/homeless people were given the clothes the store may have issues with people coming in wanting returns/swaps for the clothing but there is NO reason why the clothes couldnt be sent abroad to countries where the brand isnt availiable and help people there! It sounds like lazyness, i wonder if its just that one store or if its a a general policy that goes on with other stores/brands that we are unaware of?
xx
the problem is that retailers need to protect their bottom line from people who might try to return the merchandise for store credit, or they run the risk of losing profit to charity shops (which is kind of stingy if you ask me). Anyway, there are a few major labels who do this, especially high end brands. I suspect that someone leaked H&M's practice to NYT in order to give them some bad press and hopefully put a dent in their staggering sales. Remember Primark and the sweat shops?
I did read some alternatives that H&M could have chosen over here:

I work in the fashion indusrty and I can assure you NOTHING ever gets destroyed...things usually get sent to women's shelters and local charities.
