Review: Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers!

Worth the hype?

I don't think so.

Last week my Mac eyelash curlers that I have been happily using for about 2 years broke on me. I declared the situation an emergency and purchased the much talked about Shu Uemura version to see what all the fuss was about.

I came home and did a quick comparison with the Mac curlers and errrrrr they look exactly the same! Some people have mentioned that the curve of the rubber band on the Shu curlers is different but to me it's identical to the Mac one. See photo's below, the Shu curlers are the one's on the right in every picture.

Do I have any complaints? No!

It preforms great, but so does the Mac one. It curls my eyelashes really nicely but did I need to spend £20? No, not really. If these break on me, then I will probably repurchase the Mac curlers as it's almost half the price.

Have you tried the Shu Uemura eyelash curlers?

Great review - thank you for dispelling some of the rumours and letting me know that it doesn't live up to the hype. I want some new eyelash curlers, so off to MAC I go :o) x

I've just bought MAC eye lash curlers and I really love them! I was going to buy these ones but so glad I didn't! xxx

I don't own an eyelash curler but have always been curious about them. I wanted the Shu Uemura but since they are no longer sold in the US, I never got to purchase one. My question is does an eyelash curler REALLY do anything for lashes?? And do I really need one? Thoughts?

Thank you for this review. I've heard a lot about the Shu Uemura eye lash curlers and was going to purchase them when my current curlers needed replacing. I don't think I shall bother now. Why pay extra when you can get the exact same quality for half the price? xoxo

I use the e.l.f. eyelash curler that I bought for $1. I was thinking about the Shu Uemura, but the comparison photos have convinced me to just get MAC if I want to do an upgrade. Then I can compare the MAC to the e.l.f. curler :-)
I have them and agree they are overrated! Not crap but definitely not worth the hype, or the money "/ xxx

@Dye-A-Graham Oh certainly, without my lashes being curled they don't look as long, they make them more feminine and fluttery, you HAVE to try some!

so glad you reviewed this..was thinking of getting the MAC ones for a while now and could not decide-now im leaning over to the MAC side!

Thanks so much for posting this review! I've always been reluctant to spend so much on a pair of eyelash curlers...looks like I've been right to do so! :) X

I totally agree with you. I just recently splurged and bought the Shu Uemura curler and it is really disappointing. I like how it doesn't pinch my lashes like my old cheapo curler but honestly, it is not worth the price.

I was planning to buy the Shu one, but now I am thinking about the MAC option, which is a brand I have available here, whereas Shu is not!
Thanks so much for the helpful comparison, Bubbles!

If my Shu Umera curler I find it doesn't curl my ends that well. Might just go and purchase the Mac one, or try their smaller one.

I bought a Shiseido curler because those were hyped as well. No different than my drugstore curler. Such a disappointment.

I've heard that the Shu Uemura curler is meant for people with a more almond shaped eye, hence asians. I know it's a huge hit among asians. That's why I've been meaning to buy it; however, Shu Uemura is not available in the US anymore. =( I can only get it online.

However, the Shu Uemura curler and Mac curler do look similar in your pictures. I might check out the Mac curler 1st. =)
I think I'm the black sheep here because I absolutely love my shu curler! I think it must be something to do with my eye shape but it's my favourite curler. I also love suqqu's eyelash curler which is only £12 so a lot cheaper but harder to find in the UK x

I absolutely love my Shu curler..but I also love my Shiseido one (and I've used a friends MAC curler and it worked equally well). I think the reason why it's so hyped is because it really is better than many lower-end eyelash curlers. I used to use Maybelline/CoverGirl/Revlon ones before I tried the Shu, so it rocked my world. If I were like you and went from MAC to Shu, yeah I probably wouldn't have been super impressed either.

I agree, Shu is not the end-all in eyelash curlers, but for me, it's a huge step up from what I used previously :) Plus I have absolute stick-straight lashes that point down, so I need something heavy duty :)

Thank God someone agrees with me! I splurged on a pair of these and thought they were rubbish! My Boots own ones were better!

Thanks for the review Muhsine xo

I have two pairs and do like them, I mean they do what they are supposed to but yes totally overrated!£20 for something that looks like the £3 ones is nuts, wish they would make them pretty for the price!! xx

I have and love the Shu Uemura eyelash curler, but I've had mine for a LONG LONG time now. They didn't used to be identical--or maybe they always have been, and I've just always been partial to Shu Uemura's. Very interesting post.

Thank you SO much for this review, I always hear amazing things about the Shu eyelash curler! I have incredibly short, stick straight lashes, but I'll definitely purchase the MAC one. xx

I recently bought them, but at half the price as I'm currently in Japan so I was really glad when I felt just like you! Atm, I feel like my old curlers got to the roots better, but I do feel like the curl lasts longer with Shu's.. not quite sure! Great review :)
I wanted to get that eyelash curler earlier this year, but Sephora no longer had it so I purchased the Shiseido curler instead. I really like it!
Thanks for the review, because although I like my Shiseido, I no doubt would still be looking for the Shu Uemura curler if I hadn't read this!

I don't use a eye lash curler because...
1. It broke
2. It takes a lot of my eye lashes out
But after hearing your review I think I want to try them out again : )

Something I don't get:
If you think the Mac one is great, & say the Shu uemura is identical... How does dat make the Shu uemura one not worth it??? (Do you mean for the price, Mac's cheaper therefore better in that sense?)

I have the MAC, the Shu and the Space N.K ones, and i find that the Space N.K ones are equally as good as the other two!
My best mate swears by these and will never use anything else. I personally cant bear eyelash curlers but Im lucky in that I dont need them. I just dont get the hype at all

im looking through reviews on the shu uemura eyelash curler and saw yours. ive been meaning to try this bec it's just so popular and "iconic" but after seeing your side by side photo of it with a Mac curler, im a bit dismayed. will think through. :D thanks for the review!

I cant decide! I want a new lash curler, but my choice stands between the MAC and the Shiseido one.. My local MAC counter has become so freakin expensive that I am almost afraid walking inside the little shop. And feelunique offers the Shiseido one for £18, which is quite "cheap" for high end here in Norway.. Any tips?
